Care for your area rug is important to minimize allergens, maximize the rug’s life and enhance its aesthetic appearance – no one likes to look at or sit on a dirty, unkempt rug! So here are some helpful hints to help you look after your rug.
- Vacuum the rug regularly to remove dirt and loose fibres. Sand and soil can cause the rug fiber to shred and break when walked on and this is a permanent damage. By regular vacuuming this will reduce wear and tracking on the rug. This is recommended at least once a week. If your rug has a fringe around it, be careful that it does not get caught in the vacuum cleaner.
- Ensure that spills are mopped up as soon as possible. Use a paper towel or clean towel, mop up as much as possible, blot and dab the stain only – do not rub as this will damage the texture of the fiber and cause fuzzing.
- To remove protein stains, such as vomit, urine and blood from your rug, use a small amount of wool wash diluted in warm water. Use a clean (colourfast) sponge and gently dab the stain from the outside into the centre. Finish off with a clean sponge and 50:50 water and white vinegar, again dabbing not rubbing into the stain.
- Finally using a dry towel, place it over the area cleaned and stand on it to dry up as much as possible.
If you are not sure what to do, call Devine Rug Care first for advice on (02) 9982 1000. Incorrect use of some spotting agents will set the stain permanently, therefore sometimes it is better to do less than too much.
Note: Please do not use powder cleaners of any sort as these will damage, bleach or burn the fibre causing permanent damage.
